Grandpa, why are there people?

old_man.jpgWell, darling girl, there are a couple of ways to answer that.

The first is, “No reason, no reason at all.”

The other way is my way, which is, “First ask, why are people different enough to be important?” And my way to answer that is to say that people can observe things, and write down what they see, so that the people who come after them don’t have to observe the same things, but can build upon the observations of those who came before them.

So, not only are they self-aware—the good ones among them, that is—they can also observe the larger world, and the universe beyond it. They can use what others have seen to build devices that provide better ways of seeing, so that they can observe farther outward and inward. They build massive machines to break up very small things, and loft somewhat smaller machines into orbit around the planet to peer back into time when the universe was younger.

So, my answer to your question is, “To observe the universe.” They exist to construct the thousand-eyed sky, and when they have observed enough, and know enough, and have managed to not destroy themselves in the process, they will—either accidentally or on purpose—do something that will create another universe. And its little denizens will eventually observe and know enough to do the same thing.

This, of course, leaves us with the question of who it was who saw or knew enough to build our little bubble of space-time.

That would be me, darling girl.

But that is a different story, for another time.
